Scaramouche

The scene of "Scaramouche" is laid in France of the Revolution.  Forced to flee for his revolutionary activities, the hero joins a band of strolling players, and takes the part of Scaramouche, one of the stock characters of the French drama, whose rogueries, witticisms and adventures fit his own nature to perfection.  There follows a romance, tense, colorful and profoundly absorbing that carries one spellbound through crowded days of glorious adventure.  Never will the reader forget the sardonic Scaramouche, who fights equally well with tongue and rapier, who was "born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad."

US First Edition -- First Printing -- Binding, Title Page & Copyright Images

Attribution Point:  The First Printing [Impression] of the First Edition is clearly distinguishable from later printings by the brown cloth binding.  Be aware that the First Printing [Impression] of the First Edition must have "1921" printed at the bottom of the title page as pictured below [click images to enlarge].

Attribution Point:  Later Printings [Impressions] of the First Edition are clearly distinguishable by the change to yellow orange cloth binding.  Later Printings [Impressions] of the First Edition  omit "1921" at the bottom of the title page as pictured below [click images to enlarge].  It is very important to clarify that earlier printings [impressions] have been noted without any indication of their printing [impression] on the copyright page.  These printings are distinguished only on the original dustjacket -- which must be present in order to make a clear determination.  Also, note that later impressions do not always indicate prior impressions on the copyright page [compare 9th impression copyright page to 13th impression copyright page below].
