During a violent thunderstorm, Nancy, Bess and George seeks refuge at an inn named The Sign of the Twisted Candles. There she meets Sadie Wipple, the young stepdaughter of the cruel caretakers Frank and Emma Semmitt, and also 100-year-old Asa Sidney. During her stay, Nancy becomes embroiled in an ancient family feud that may cost her the friendship of her dear chums Bess and George.
