At the Earth's Core

Mr. Burroughs has startled the world with his amazing stories of the Jungle and of the planet Mars, but of all the many astounding yarns he has written, this is far and away the most marvelous and fascinating.  David Innes and his inventor friend, when they sought to test the practicability of their "subterranean prospector" made an amazing discovery.  The two men pierced through the Earth's crust and found a world, with living, breathing, functioning humans and animals, but a world still in the Stone Age.  The hairbreadth escapes of the two men, the weird monsters encountered, the touch of romance and the manner of telling make this one of Burroughs' very best.

Pellucidar

This is indeed a rare bit of fantasy.  An adventurer bivouacked for the night on the torrid sands of the Sahara Desert is awakened by a staccato sound coming from the earth beneath his head.  Digging, he unearthed a box containing telegraph instruments from which a cable extended straight down through the earth.  In this box he found a slip of paper initialed D.I.  Knowing that eleven years ago in this arid spot two prospectors had tunnelled their way to the core of the earth, he recalled that one was David Innes who Mr. Burroughs had chronicled on that earth-ward trip.  From the core of the earth comes a strange and marvelous account of his exploration of the Great Empire of Pellucidar, its people, gigantic animals, grotesque beauty, its perpetual sun and his love and hazardous search for Dian the Beautiful.

Tanar of Pellucidar

Pellucidar -- the hollow center of the earth, a world of savage men and prehistoric beasts -- is the scene of this story which records new and startling exploits of Tanar, that gallant adventurer.  In Pellucidar, dwell the Buried People, here is the Land of the Awful Shadow, here the Korsar pirates terrorize the towns.  Reptiles of gigantic size, saber-toothed tigers, ferocious cave bears and huge mastedons roam the wilderness.  Into this world two Americans are precipitated.  David Innes and Abner Perry, experimenting with a powerful device made to bore through the earth's crust, lose control and are plunged down to the earth's core.  Here, in Pellucidar, they aid the inhabitants against the Mahars, winged monsters of prodigious strength.  David Innes becomes Emperor of Pellucidar.  But now a menace threatens.  Tanar, the young Chieftain, is carried off by the piratic Korsars.  On the ship Tanar meets the lovely Stellara and in this strange world of primitive terror he struggles for life and the girl he loves.

Back to the Stone Age

When the great dirigible, the giant 0-220 sailed majestically through the north polar opening out of that weird and savage inner world, Pellucidar, it left behind, unaccounted for, but a single member of its original crew that had sailed with Jason Gridley and Tarzan to the rescue of David Innes. That man was Lieutenant von Horst, and this is the story of the strange adventures that befell him among the stone age peoples of Pellucidar as he wandered, friendless and alone, from one danger to another. Interwoven with it is the story of the lore of this cultured man for a little, barbarian slave girls who spurned and derided him and discouraged him and ran away from him for a strange purpose that keeps the reader guessing to the very end. Here we encounter mighty reptiles and huge animals that have been extinct upon the outer crust for thousands of years but which roam today the plains and forests of the world beneath our feet. Here we live with savage cave men in the country of the Basti and the Mammoth Men, with the hideous Gorbuses in the caverns beneath the Forest of Death, and at last to Lo-Har where the terrible Gaz waits to destroy von Horst. It's a story that will make you forget the petty annoyances of the day. It will even make you forget the income tax.

Land of Terror

Pellucidar!  Land of everlasting noon-tide, where the motionless sun hangs perpetually at zenith ...  That weird world that is the core of our own Earth, where roam great beasts and reptiles, strange birds which the outer crust of Earth has not seen for a million years and more ...  Scientists smiled at the belief that this Earth is indeed a hollow sphere, inside it a land where savage cave men live, unknowing of the civilized world five hundred miles beneath their feet -- that there is an entrance to this land through the Poles.  But Jason Gridley believed -- and he it was who fitted out and financed the expedition of the giant dirigible 0-220 to visit Pellucidar.  A fast-moving, adventuresome and thrilling story ... it's completely captivating ... a story such as only the fertile, creative genius of Edgar Rice Burroughs could produce, and which you are sure to enjoy to the utmost.

Savage Pellucidar

When David Innes and Abner Perry set out, many years ago, to explore for mineral deposits in Perry's newly invented Mechanical Prospector, they never dreamed of the beautiful, terrifying world of Pellucidar lying 500 miles beneath their feet. When their machine went out of control and plunged them into this strange inner world, they were thrown into a country of fierce fighting men, beautiful women, and vicious beasts such as our outer world has not seen for many millions of years. David won the love of the breathtaking Dian, and they were by the exact and ceremonies of Pellucidar more truly than any wedding ceremony of the outer world. David set out to teach Pellucidar the ways of civilization, and succeeded in gathering a number of primitive kingdoms into the Empire of Pellucidar. Abner Perry, meanwhile continuing his career as an inventor, topped in invention of gunpowder that would not burn with a ship that promptly turned turtle upon being launched. In Savage Pellucidar, Abner turns his inventive genius to the science of aeronautics, with dire results for both David and Dion. In Savage Pellucidar we also meet Hodon the heroic, and O-aa, a maiden of undeniable charm whose boasts of the archer, sire and ferociousness of her other relatives defy credibility. Savage Pellucidar is a complete science fiction adventure novel, a masterful blending of action, humor and suspense.
