She

Professor Holly, a teacher in an English university has been appointed guardian of a small boy.  The child is the son of one of the married students, who, ill with a fatal complaint, seeks to dispose of his affairs before the end.  The legacy of Professor Holly is fantastic.  In addition to a fine bequest for himself, he is admonished to bring up the aforementioned child, who, upon coming of age is to fulfill a strange destiny.  The dying father declares his son to be the direct descendant of an ancient Greek priest called Kilecrates who lived 2,000 years ago.  He has documents to substantiate his incredible statements regarding the family lineage.  In the ancient days Kilecrates was dispoiled of his beloved bride and his property by the machinations of a magnificent but diabolical queen.  Kilecrates, wondrously handsome, inspired the queen's love,.  What she loved, she demanded and destruction followed rebellion.  The queen's name was, SHE.  Her rulership included a secret country hidden in darkest Africa and up to the present day SHE reigned supreme over her subjects, flaunting all natural laws, including death.  Prophetic documents included in the will of the dying student, order the son forth upon his majority to seek this hidden land and have his reckoning with SHE.  Professor Holly proves himself a conscientious foster father and his little charge grows up to be a fine man.  According to instructions, Professor Holly and his ward set out for the hidden land.  Regardless of difficulties, they find SHE's kingdom.  In this miraculous country, ruled over by an ageless Queen and surrounded by splendid barbarism, the two Englishmen risk their lives to probe the secrets of the past and settle old scores.  SHE's ancient passion for Kilecrates is transferred to his descendant.  There ensues a monumental clash of wills strengthened by age old emotions.  In fantastic primitive fires of love and hate, this drama is played out to its amazing end.

Wisdom's Daughter

A fantastic tale of colossal vanity and pride, of jealousy and passion, of treachery and murder, of the downfall of kings and the overthrow of empires.  It tells of how a high priestess to the goddess Isis fell in love with a Greek, priest to the same goddess; of how, breaking all her vows, she embraced the King of Fire, thereby gaining external youth, beauty and life; of how, in her wrath she slew the Greek because he rejected her love; and how for two thousand years she still waited for him to come in another incarnation.  Sir Rider Haggard writes fascinating tales of the four corners of the earth which he has explored -- of which "Wisdom's Daughter" is of the best.
