Riddle of the Frozen Flame, The [UK: Frozen Flame, The]

This time the redoubtable detective is called to the Lincolnshire fen to investigate the mystery of the frozen flames, which appear at nightfall in a marsh adjoining the estate of Sir Nigel Merriton.  The murder of Dacre Wynne is connected with these terrible fires, and none but a master mind can untangle the skein of events, leading up to the disappearance and the finding of his body months after.  At the same time, every bank in England report losses in gold in quick succession.  The dovetailing of these two happenings in a plausible manner is done only as the Hanshews can do it, and makes a story that is one of the best by these two popular authors.

Riddle of the Night, The

Briefly, the situation is this:  Returning home late at night, the limousine of Mr. Maverick Narkom (Superintendent of Scotland Yard) is brought up sharp by a shot and the cry of murder.  A brief search leads the superintendent to a little broken down cottage where a gruesome find is made.  There, spiked to the wall with arms outstretched, is the body of an unknown man.  A mysterious series of figures and letters is scrawled upon the white shirt front of the victim.  Cleek, with the help of Ailsa Lorne and half-burned portions of a shoe polish label, finally solves the mystery of the murder.
