Ask Miss Mott  [Little Brown - 1st US]

"Accept no invitations, go nowhere without letting me know, give up your apartment and live at your club.  Meredith has offered a reward of 5,000 for your abduction."  This was the message received by Miss Lucie Mott, who conducted a "Beatrice Fairfax" column for the London Daily.  It was Miss Mott's avocation, the operating of a private inquiry bureau, which had landed her head over heels in the middle of trouble.  One evening, alone at her desk, the door opened slightly, a hand reached in far enough to turn off the light, and the odor of violets filled the office, as a shadowy, masked figure entered.  This was her introduction to Violet Joe, much wanted but elusive member of London's underworld.  From that time on she seemed fated to interfere willingly or unwillingly with the operations of Joe's gang.  Her real perils, however, started when she caught the fancy of Meredith, Scotland Yard's greatest enemy.

Battle of Basinghall Street, The

The arch-villain sat in the office of the chairman of Woolito, Ltd., wool manufacturers on Basinghall Street.  Seven minor villains from time to time occupied the chairs around the director's table.  "Ruthless competition and let the strong man win" might well have been engraved on the wall of that room.  The Earl of Sandbrook had gone from it to his death, a broken man.  He left a son.  There are chinks in the finest armor.  Young Sandbrook set out to find those in the armor of the eight.  One -- two -- three -- four --, shadows rise out of the past to humiliate Bomford, to ruin Mayden-Harte, to wreck Moody, to imprison Littleburn.  And Sandbrook is not yet satisfied.

Box With Broken Seals, The  [Little Brown - 1st US]

This is a story of intrigue, unfolding in the author's best style in a thrilling narrative of Jocelyn Thew and the British Secret Service.  The reader follows with avidity the daring moves of Thew from the time he sails from New York on the "City of Boston,"  accompanied by a dying man and a special nurse in the person of Katharine Beverley, a society girl who is under obligations to Thew.  The eventual trip across the Atlantic and the attempts of an agent to outwit his enemies in England leads to the climax which will surprise even the inveterate Oppenheim reader.

Cinema Murder, The  [Little Brown - 1st US]

Philip Romilly, and indigent London art teacher and would-be playwright, is tacitly engaged to marry Beatrice Wenderly, who is as poor as himself.  The outlook is so hopeless that Beatrice decides to accept Philip's rich cousin, Douglas Romilly.  Philip creates a scene and then disappears, sailing for America as Douglas Romilly.  On the steamer he meets Elizabeth Dalstan, an American actress, who saw two men go under a canal bridge on the eventful day when Philip decided to impersonate his cousin.  Only one man was seen to emerge, and Elizabeth recognizes her fellow passenger, Douglas Romilly, as the one.  What happens when Philip reaches New York, how he is befriended by Elizabeth, his varied experiences with the many phases of metropolitan life, all conspire to thrill and excite the reader until the final solution of the mystery is solved.  The action of the story is rapid and the New York background and characters are as realistic as his English.

Colossus of Arcadia, The  [Little Brown - 1st US]

How war between two European powers was narrowly circumvented is the theme of the latest novel by this unsurpassed exponent of international intrigue.  The scene is the French Riviera; the hero, Rudolph, a likeable young man whose stay in Monte Carlo almost precipitated a clash of arms; the heroine, Joan Haskell, a charming American girl who unwittingly finds herself in the midst of a drama that threatens to end in a world war.  Mr. Oppenheim is at his best when he is depicting life at Monte Carlo.  In this little world of wealth and nobility, he tells of Lucullan banquets, sports by day, and nights of music and dancing.  There are the thrills of secret dictatorship, threatened revolt of the Reds, a spy that is a typical Oppenheim creation, sudden deaths, and first-rate love interest.

Devil's Paw, The

This is a clever story.  The plot is based on a conspiracy to draw the labor leaders of England into illegal peace negotiations with the enemy, negotiations which would result in chaos for their country.  One of the leading characters is the daughter of an English Colonel, known as Miss Katherine Abbeway, although she inherits from her Russian mother the title of "Countess."  She is entrusted by the secret arbitrators with a most important mission and has the temporary custody of a valuable document.  She is suspected by the police of being a spy, and only saves herself from death by giving the papers into the keeping of young Orden, the son of her hostess, whose interest and admiration she has always aroused.  Once saved, Miss Abbeway betrays most feminine inconsistency by being furious with Orden for not returning to her the treasonable documents.  His very reasonable obstinacy leads to various complications and runs him into serious danger.  Secret agents naturally play an important part in the story.  The Oppenheim interest runs through the story and the reader keeps turning the pages eagerly as the plot develops.

Envoy Extraordinary  [Little Brown - 1st US]

"The romance of secret diplomacy has enthralled me for years, I have tried to reason out the desires and ambitions of various nations .. I have had no particular advance knowledge of world affairs, I have reasoned for myself, 'This nation is aiming toward this' and 'That nation is aiming toward that'."  -- E. Phillips Oppenheim ... Prior knowledge or none, in "The Mysterious Mr. Sabin" he anticipated the Boer War by seven years; in "The Mischief Maker" and "The Great Secret" he foretold the Great War; in "Miss Brown of X.Y.O." he was ahead of the British Secret Service in breaking off relations with Russia.  In this new story Mr. Oppenheim presents two ideas that might iron out all of the wrinkles in the brows of European statesmen.  Moreover, it is one of his most interesting and exciting stories.  A mantle of mystery wraps itself around the reader in the first paragraphs which is sustained almost to the graphic final scene.

Ex-Detective, The

In a series of connected episodes Mr. Oppenheim recounts the astonishing adventures which befall Malcolm Gossett almost immediately after he resigns from Scotland Yard.  Irritated at the limitations and methods imposed on him by his superiors at the Yard and having a keen sympathy for those unfortunate accused of crime and inadequately defended, Gossett sets up as a private investigator.  his unusual intelligence and intuition bring him success in all sorts of commissions which come his way:  in solving mysterious disappearances, murders and robberies, in tracking down false evidence, in straightening out international tangles and problems.  His methods are a combination of shrewd observation and inductive reasoning, backed by his Scotland Yard training and a wide knowledge of the criminal mind.  The result is a series of thrilling exploits.  Malcolm Gossett is a newcomer in a field of super-detectives and it is to be hoped that his creator will invent more difficulties for him to solve.

Fortunate Wayfarer, The  [Little Brown - 1st US]

In this thrilling tale of international intrigue -- a theme which has provided Mr. Oppenheim with material for many of his most popular novels -- a conference between the Great Powers is being held in London.  The questions to be settled are ware debts and the rehabilitation of Germany, a country which Felix Dukane, one of the world's richest men, is willing to finance.  His daughter, Estelle, as calculating as her father, has fascinated both Mark Van Stratton a member of the American Embassy, and Lord Dorchester, an Englishman in politics.  A famous international spy possesses secret information concerning Germany, which he is willing to impart for suitable inducement.  If this information reaches the conference, Dukane's proposal will be disregarded.  The story deals with the spy's offer to Dukane, the latter's refusal, and then his endeavor to prevent the attempts of the Marquis de Fontanay, an old war-time friend of Van Stratton and Dorchester, to secure it for France; and with the endeavors of both men and Estelle to sway the American to their own ends.

Gabriel Samara, Peacemaker

Once again Mr. Oppenheim projects his story into the future and unfolds, in his inimitable manner, happenings of a momentous character.  The opening events take place in New York, where Gabriel Samara, the conqueror of Bolshevism and the virtual head of the new Russian Republic, engages as his secretary Catherine Borans, one of the New York group of Russian refugees who are awaiting the day when Russia shall once more become a monarchy.  The scenes shift to Monte Carlo, London and Moscow as the principal characters return to their native land.  The attractive and accomplished Catherine proves to be a Russian Princess, who must choose between Prince Nicholas Imanoff, heir to the Russian throne, and the peace-loving, strong man of the people, Gabriel Samara.  Samara is bound to carry out his self-chosen task of making Russia a great republic, but he is caught by Catherine's charm.  Nicholas, in turn, loses no time in advancing his own interests with the Royalists, and in claiming Catherine's help.

A Cabinet Minister starts by car for London after a day's shooting in Norfolk.  He reaches home after an experience that might well haunt his dreams for the rest of his life.  A lady steps into a taxi to keep a dinner engagement -- and never arrives at her destination.  A gentleman sits peacefully in his library -- the curtain flaps at an open window -- the room is empty!  A murderer is hung at Wandsworth Goal.  Between these four incidents there is a connection so subtle that Scotland Yard can make no headway in solving the riddle -- until Detective Pank decides to quit the service.  An atmosphere of icy fascination grips the reader at the very start of "The Gallows of Chance."  As the story progresses, the figure of the beautiful Katherine Brandt stands out in sharp relief as she moves triumphantly through the coils of intrigue.  Here is Mr. Oppenheim at his unbeatable best.

Glenlitten Murder, The

When DeBesset was shot dead in the bedroom of Felice, the Russian-born Marchioness of Glenlitten and the famous necklace had disappeared, it was taken for granted that the Frenchman had come to Lady Glenlitten's aid and had been murdered by the burglar.  But the latter, when caught, disclaimed possession of the necklace and swore he had not carried a gun, and there were reasons for believing him.  There were also reasons for thinking that Felice knew much more about the affair than she would acknowledge.  There certainly was some mystery about her, apparent even to her adoring husband, and it is to the unraveling of that mystery and to the detection of the murderer that Mr. Oppenheim has brought all his resources.  Who killed DeBesset and who stole the necklace?  What did Felice fear and how much of the real truth did her husband know or suspect?

Great Prince Shan, The

This is a gripping story of plots, intrigues and romance.  The author here carries us forward to the year 1934; England is socially overturned, Germany has kept on hating and waiting, and at the time of our story she seems to have a well-assured arrangement with Russia and China for the humiliation of the enemy, Britain.  China has become the dominant East and the Great Prince Shan is her Lord.  In the hands of Shan rest the destinies of the European West.  America is still an onlooker.  upon the scene thus set with menace, Mr. Oppenheim arrays his company of diplomats, special agents, pretty women, including an adventuress or two.  he stages mysterious conferences and an occasional assassination.  The Great Prince arrives in London by airplane from China.  He is the dominant figure in the Orient and in his hands rests the decision whether or not China shall sign the compact with the German plotters.  A story of adventurous intrigue in international politics.

Spymaster, The  [Little Brown - 1st US]

Time after time, Mr. Oppenheim has written stories of international intrigue that have been almost uncanny in their prophecy.  It has been hard at times entirely to believe his oft-repeated assertion that he has no secret sources of information.  In this instance some of those who draw parallels between current history and Mr. Oppenheim's stories will be inclined to wish that Mr. Oppenheim held a Cabinet position of importance.  The plot of "The Spymaster" concerns the attempt by certain powers to make demands on Great Britain in the belief that she is unprepared to face the consequences of refusal, and on the efforts of Admiral Guy Cheshire, Head of the British Naval Intelligence, to see that false information about Britain's condition shall reach these powers.  This is not a war without women.  The intriguing Countess Pelucchi, her beautiful sister Elida, and the tempting Rubenesque Mrs. Florestan are important factors in the plot.  The setting is modern London.
