This was the

It was Miss
Mott's
avocation,
the
operating of

head over
heels in the
middle of
trouble.
One evening,
alone at her

slightly, a
hand reached
in far

the odor of
violets
filled the
office, as a
shadowy,
masked

entered.
This was her
introduction

wanted but
elusive

London's

From that
time on she
seemed fated

Her real
perils,
however,
started when
she caught

The scene is

heroine,
Joan

One of the

company into
the wee
small hours

Crippled, he
could not

From this

Living in

From his

Spymaster,
The
[Little
Brown
-
1st US]
Time after
time, Mr.
Oppenheim
has written
stories of
international
intrigue
that have
been almost
uncanny in
their
prophecy.
It has been
hard at
times
entirely to
believe his
oft-repeated
assertion
that he has
no secret
sources of
information.
In this
instance
some of
those who
draw
parallels
between
current
history and
Mr.
Oppenheim's
stories will
be inclined
to wish that
Mr.
Oppenheim
held a
Cabinet
position of
importance.
The plot of
"The
Spymaster"
concerns the
attempt by
certain
powers to
make demands
on Great
Britain in
the belief
that she is
unprepared
to face the
consequences
of refusal,
and on the
efforts of
Admiral Guy
Cheshire,
Head of the
British
Naval
Intelligence,
to see that
false
information
about
Britain's
condition
shall reach
these
powers.
This is not
a war
without
women.
The
intriguing
Countess
Pelucchi,
her
beautiful
sister Elida,
and the
tempting
Rubenesque
Mrs.
Florestan
are
important
factors in
the plot.
The setting
is modern
London.
