While
en
route
to San
Francisco
from
Brentwood,
Ken
and
Sandy
decide
to
spend
some
time
on the
Arizona/Mexico
border,
in the
sleepy
town
of
Gallows
Cliff.
They
hope
to
visit
the
archaeological
dig
being
worked
by the
Brewster
Natural
History
Museum,
under
the
guidance
of Dr.
Frazer
Talbott.
EL
Diablo
is the
name
of the
excavation
site.
Upon
entering
the
outskirts,
they
run
into
Ramon
Gonzalez,
a
Mexican
Federale
who
had
helped
the
boys
solve
"The
Green
Flame
Mystery",
some
time
ago.
Mysteriously,
he
pretends
to be
someone
else,
and
thus
the
intrigue
begins.
A few
moments
after
the
strange
encounter,
Ramon
reappears
and
confirms
his
real
identity,
along
with
FBI
agent
Mort
Phillips,
also
of the
Green
Flame
case.
The
two
law
enforcers
explain
that
they
are
working
on a
case
involving
the
smuggling
of
illegal
firearms
into
the
United
States
from
Mexico.
At
El
Diablo,
Sandy
and
Ken
are
greeted
less
than
cordially
by Gus
Parks
and
Clint
Tomen,
two of
Dr.
Frazer's
assistants.
While
investigating
on
behalf
of
Ramon
and
Mort,
in the
vicinity
of
Gallows
Cliff,
the
two
sleuths
are
almost
killed
by a
man-made
avalanche
of
deadly
rock.
Shortly
after
they
are
captured
by the
smugglers
and
realize
that
there
is a
tie-in
between
that
illegal
operation
and
the
excavation
at El
Diablo.
In a
daring
underwater
attempt
to
escape
their
captors,
Ken,
Sandy,
and
Mort
are
almost
successful
and
trick
all
gang
members,
except
for
the
ring
leader.
A
vicious
underground
battle
ensues
in
which
the
forces
of
good
defeat
the
purveyors
of
violence.
Gallows
Cliff
will
never
be the
same!
