The Allen's are to be visited by Ricardo Montez, friend of Roberto Rosario, from their earlier case called "The Mystery of the Green Flame". He is attacked immediately upon his arrival in Brentwood. Ken and Sandy take Ricardo to Richard Holt's apartment in New York City, where two masked gunmen attempt to rob the three youths. If not for the interference by adjoining neighbor, Mr. Taylor ... Why have these attacks occurred ? Could Ricardo's family heirloom (amulet) hold the answer ? The boys decide to journey to Mexico to discover the answer.

To help themselves during this possible treasure hunt, Sandy and Ken arm themselves with "Megabucks", the miniature radio transceivers developed by their friends at Spindrift, Rick Brant and Don Scott. While unsuccessfully searching the remnants of the Obregon hacienda, the two teens realize they are under observation. But by who ? That is what Sandy and Ken set out to find out. After identifying their foes, all three are soon captured by them and forced to perform slave labor. While trapped by their mysterious foes, Sandy and Ken discover the meaning of the Plumed Serpent on Ricardo's amulet. How they utilized this information to outwit their villainous enemies and help solve an old family mystery for Ricardo, make this one of Ken and Sandy's most exciting adventures.
